Street Name Signs

Street name signs are an integral part of a community’s identity. If you want to beautify your community and make it a safer and easier place in which to drive, your street sign program is a great place to begin! To be distinctive, street signs are made to order. These signs are double faced (double sided), with standard colors being white characters on a green background, white on blue or black on white. Other colors are available.

Aluminum Street Name Signs are available in the two metal types illustrated below — flat (.080, .100, or .125 GA thickness) and extruded. You choose the grade of sheeting which suits your needs and/or state/community specifications —  Engineer Grade, Prismatic High Intensity, or Diamond Grade3. Signs can be ordered single or double sided, with or without a border, with multiple color choices, on multiple styles/layouts. Both flat and extruded signs are available in 6″ and 9″ heights with lengths varying from 18″ to 54″ depending on the amount of text needed. Larger sizes are also available for 12″, 15″, and 18″ heights at varying lengths.

Novelty Street Signs Banned for Use on Roads

Over the years, we get helpful information about traffic control issues from the cities we deal with. One increasing problem is the use of novelty street name signs on public or private roads which is banned by the cities. The Federal Highway Administration has specific requirements on street signs for use on public or private roadways, and with good reason. Requirements like official sizes, correct letter heights, fonts, spacing, and reflectivity. Novelty signs don’t adhere to these standards. The reported problem is emergency vehicles (Fire, Medical, Police) are having a difficult time trying to locate the street when novelty signs are used. Novelty signs are okay to put on your wall but should never be used on streets or roads. High intensity reflective signs are recommended for city use.

Novelty signs make great holiday gifts, funny workplace signs, no trespassing signs and perfect for college students, home or office.

Tips on constructing street name signs

  • The brighter the reflective sheeting and the larger the sign panel, the better. Best contrast colors for both day and night are white characters on a green or blue background.
  • Common rule of thumb: One inch of letter height for each 40 to 50 feet of legibility distance. Optimal letter height is 6″ or more.
  • Letter fronts vary by stroke width and letter width from Series B (thinnest) to Series E modified (thicker and wider). Standard specifications call for Series B name and Series C suffix.
